Lady Breakers Come Up Short

Well, I guess the ride you get on sooner or later pulls up, stops, and forces you to get out. That's what happened tonight in our game against St. Margarets. This Roller Coaster we've been on all year full of thrills, stomach-dropping hills, and forced-drowsiness pills finally ended with a three pointer that went in and then out.....ride over.

First quarter: we were horrible. Gave up 21 points, while only scoring 12. The girls were a little nervous and jittery and took awhile to settle down but when we did, we started playing like only the Lady Breakers can. We battled back, winning the 2nd and 3rd quarters and trailed by one going into the 4th. It seemed like we had them on their heels and we were charging. Our defense was in lock-down mode and offense was clicking. Score 40-39.

4th quarter was a struggle back and forth. The game started getting physical as no team wanted to lose and go home. Our seniors came to play and were battling all night. They left all they had on the floor and then came the pivotal moment: Lady Breakers trailed by 3 with the ball and 40 seconds to play. After using my last time out, we set up a play for our shooting guard. She missed but the ball was batted out of bounds by St. Margarets. It was still our ball and our out of bounds play worked to perfection: Our point guard who holds Laguna's career record for 3s was left open in corner...result: In and out. We were forced to foul and thus lost by 5.

Final Score: 56-51.

I couldn't be more proud of the effort the girls gave just like they did all year. It's been an awesome season both on and off the court for me. I'm so glad I was able to coach this group of seniors. Next year will be tough without them but just like most theme parks, we run to the next line in anticipation of the thrill of a new ride.

Can hardly wait.....

The Lady Breakers are sweet!!
It was so fun to see them in action, sorry the season is over. Forget Disneyland, next year we're spending our money on Lady Breakers court-side seats!

In a former life I coached a JV high school basketball team. After one our few wins the opposing team's varsity coach came up to me, gave me a hug (he was my freshman coach) and said something like: "how a team plays is a function of a coach's will." Consider this a hug from me - congratulations on a great season.

A big thanks to all of you!

It's been an awesome year, made even more awesome by your comments and congratulatory posts.

It was funny...the girls were emotional after the game and on the bus ride home but afterwards we all went to Taco Bell to celebrate a great season and by the time we were done, there was laughter and smiles all around.

It was definitely well worth the extra time it takes to be a coach these days.
